“Miss Jean Louise, stand up. Your father’s passin’.” P.211
I like this quote because it shows the respect that the black people have gotten for Atticus. Atticus ended up loosing the case but he managed to do something else. Now the black people know that they are not alone, they can see that there are people out there that dont see color only people. Maybe Atticus wasn’t thinking that anything good could come out of him loosing the case but it did. I think that the people knew that it was a lost cost and they knew that Atticus knew it too but the fact that he never gave up and gave it his all made them respect him even more.

This picture represents Tom trying to escape jail. He needs to be free like a deer. And sometimes cruel people shoot the deer. Just like how they shot Tom for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. He ended up losing the case and had to go to jail. He wanted freedom, so he took a risk and tried to escape. Just like some deer, they don’t make it across the fence, and sadly for Tom he did not make it past the fence either. End of story, Tom did nothing wrong like the deer and was shot to death. Tom should have been innocent and be with his family instead of dead.

I knew that the jury was probably going to go against tom but it still surprissed me that not even one of the jury members was on tome side. They obviuosly knew that what they were doing was wrong because none of them could look at tom. There wasn’t enough evidence to convict hm and more than enough to prove that he was inocent but they convicted him anyways. The way i see it this is the part of the book that shows what extent racism when to during does times. They ae ruining a mans life just because of his skin color. Tom is inocent and everyone knows it.

The part that stood out to me was when Atticus wanted to see Calpurnia. He had surprising news for her. I would have never thought the news would be that Tom died. I believe it was brave for Tom to try to escape to keep his manhood and what he believed. It was not the smartest decision because he was going against people who had guns and could fire them at any time to end his life. He took a choice and he kept running just for freedom. It was cruel to put Tom through all that pain. Was 17 shots really necessary to take person down? However, Tom’s death will not be forgotten because his court case made everyone see a different side. It was one-step towards breaking the prejudice barrier. This chapter really shows how prejudice can kill people. Just because he lost the court case and was forced to jail an innocent person was killed. This really shows that it was hard to be a “guilty” black man during those times. Tom risked it all to be free and to be united once again with his family. Tom is truly a hero in the community but not everyone recognizes it.

“In the name of god, believe him” Page 206
When atticus says his final coment jem thiinks that this is what he said. Even though atticus had a verry strong argument the jurry is still extremelty racist and will probably want to convict tom even if they know that he is inocent. Tom is a black man in the hands of a white jurry, the chances of him getting away are very slim. Atticus knows this and he hopes that the jury will do the right thing and let tom have his freedom. The only thing that Atticus can do now is pray that they will do the right thing.

This is a picture representing racism. Tom is the brown egg and the white people are the white eggs. People in Maycomb are racist towards Tom because of his skin color. Tom has no way to escape this; he did not choose what color he wanted to be. Racism leads to the truth not being accepted. Those people are so used to living in a society full of prejudice people, they are not willing to change. Just like the background of this picture, it leaves a blank and empty place. Where people are not created equal and people automatically side with the winning side. A racist place is not where someone wants to live.

The case of Tom and the Ewell was intense and noticeable, but what I noticed was the little part. The part where Mr. Dolphus Raymond is being nice to black people and white people. Over half of the town is cruel to black people. Even though all people are created equal less than half of the town understand that. And it is the people that believe in that that stick out and make a difference, while the rest is racist and is discriminating because of color. I believe it was nice of him to let Dill drink from his paper bag. And Dill trusted him and drank out of it. He acts drunk because he doesn’t want to explain to people why is treating black men equally and why he is being nice to everyone. And I agree with Mr. Raymond’s belief that children of all colors that are sad about the trial have not been corrupted from what other people think. They have a chance to treat everyone equally and grow up in a society where everyone is equal. Mr. Raymond is a wise man that could treat the kids not to discriminate, he is a good example and it showed in this section of reading. He is sort of like Atticus, but the difference is that Atticus is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in. Atticus, unlike Raymond, does not need to be “drunk” to stand up for what’s right even though he knows everyone is against him.

YAY!!! It’s time for another one of my SUPER DUPER song selections!!! ….Ugh….. I know you hate them as much as I do. Just don’t tell me… it’ll hurt my feelings : (
The part of the chapters that I read that caught my attention was when Jem, Scout, and Dill stood up to the lynch mob that threatened to hurt Atticus. That must have took a lot of courage, considering that the mob could have easily killed all three of them right then and there. The only thing that stopped them was Scout being calm and innocent when she talked to the mob, which I thought took guts. I know that if I was in Scout’s position, I’d probably get nervous, pee my pants and run home. But that’s just me. The song I chose to represent this section of the book is the Song Strength, Courage and Wisdom by India Arie. Basically the song is about how he found courage deep within himself that he never knew was there. I guess this could represent Scout’s suddenly finding courage to stand up to the mob. So, yeah. That’s it. Till next time…

Let me explain this picture, it may seem to have nothing to do with the book, but it does. It is like Dill is the big guy and Scout is the girl. Dill would “hide” under her bed, just like how I imagined the big guy would, (Even though they never did in the book). And turns out that the big guy is a good guy instead of a scary “snake.” This basically represents Dill hiding under the bed and this one event makes it so they go on an adventure every day. Just like the movie, they go on an adventure just because of one event that occurred. This is a life changing event, that may be small. If it was not for this event they probably would not have went to see their father and save Scout’s father from bad things that the guys would have done to him.

I found it umbalivable how Aunt Alexandria who just came wants Atticus to fire Calpurnia. ALexandria wanted atticus to fire calpurnia.l I found that that was kind of out of line. Also I think that Alexandria was showing Scout that she was kind of racist. Alexadria would not let Scout go to calpurnia’s house and she did it becasuse of the calpurnias race. She might have actually been worried about Scout and Jem. She wanted to make sure they were safe but she did it in the wrong way.

One idea that caught my eye was how Scout felt something under her bed and believes it was a snake, but it was actually Dill. Dill always seemed like a happy and the type of kid to break the rules. And shows when he decided to run away from home. I find it sad that he ran away from home because of his parents and basically how he was not needed in their everyday life. Being a good friend, Scout gives him some food. And Jem decides to tell Atticus about Dill being there. Eventually Dill gets to stay. I think it is very kind of them to let Dill stay. Scout should be thankful and happy that she has a family that cares and loves her. Dill makes her see that. Dill may not live the nicest life, but he tries to understand life by taking a risk and having an adventure. Having so much stress in their families life, they still had time for Dill. This shows that Scout’s family is a caring family and how Dill’s parents are careless people. They probably did not even notice he was gone. It is weird that Boo is always on Scout’s mind because she asks Dill on why Boo will not run away. This part was sad because Dill was not wanted by his family.

This picture shows how Mrs. Dubose tried to stop her addiction. Just like many people run stop signs and don’t listen, many people would have keep doing the addiction if they knew they were going to die soon. Mrs. Dubose keep going on with her life after she tried to stop her addiction. Stopping is difficult, but she tried. But unlike a stop sign, it takes time to stop an addiction. Jem and Scout stopped what they were doing and were forced to help Mrs. Dubose. Just like it is safe to stop at a stop sign, it was safer to try to stop an addiction.

When i started reading chapter 10 it said that Uncle Jack had to teach Jem and Scout how to shoot and that Atticus wasn’t interested in guns. Later on we find out that Atticus is called one shoot Finch. For a guy who is blind from one eye and doesn’t like guns he is really good at shooting! Atticus also said that he hadn’t used a gun in thirty years and in order for him to be as good as he is he probably used them a lot. In the beginning scout is complaining of how boring atticus is and how she wishes that he was more exiting. I’m pretty sure that after seeing what he could do her opinion on him changed. After reading this it made wonder what could have happened to Atticus that made him change. He obviously doesn’t like guns anymore and isn’t very happy abut his kids using them so something really bad most have happened, i just don’t know what it is. This definitely makes me more interested in Atticus because now i see that there is a lot more to him that meets the eye.

In these few chapters Mrs. Dubose died. Her death was tragic, but peaceful in an unusual way. She had an addiction to morphine. But to make her a good brave woman she never gave up trying to stop her addiction. While she was living knowing that she was going to die, she stood strong and kept a good example and tried to stop her addiction. Even when death was coming for her she fought for what was right. She may look ugly, but she was only trying to pass time. Jem and Scout made her happy and it is little deeds that keep people happy. Just like Boo, they do little deeds. Boo is similar to Jem and Scout and it is starting to show. Just by visiting, it could stop her addiction a bit. Just like Boo giving Scout the blanket to keep warm. This just to show that it is never right to judge someone. Jem and Scout are nice and show they care by staying at the house longer every week leading up to her death. It may seem that everything happens for a reason, because Jem and Scout were at the wrong place at the wrong time. However, they made a major impact in someone’s life in the end and help ease the addiction out of Mrs. Dubose. Now Mrs. Dubose lived her life with no regrets knowing that she tried to stop her addiction.

WAIT! Before you post comments on how this song has absolutely nothing to do with the book, let me explain. The reason I chose the song is really only for the title. It represents the part in the book when Miss Maudies house burns down. This part really caught my attention, because it was such a sad thing to happen to a sweet lady. I probably should have got a better song to symbolize this section in this story, but I couldn’t find any others. If you have any suggestions, post a comment.

This song reminds me of how scouts teacher, Miss Caroline couldn’t accept the fact that scout already knew how to read, and how scout got in trouble for this. The song is about how messed up our teachers and education system is, which still holds true in the book. It may not be as bad as it is portrayed in the book, but it’s close.

This house symbolizes the burning of Miss Maudie’s house. Instead of seeing it in flames, she would see a new beginning. She always wanted a new house that was small and had enough room for a beautiful garden. While the house was burning, she would probably see happiness instead of sorrow. She would get to spend her time being happy and starting her garden. While other were sorry about her house being gone, Miss Maudie was cheerful. Miss Maudie is unusual but understandable. This shows Miss Maudie’s dream house and what she hopes it will turn out after she is done adding her touches to her new house.

I was surprised on how children can think of such a sneaky plan just because of a legend. Dill, Jem, and Scout all decided to get together and sneak over to Boo’s place. This idea was funny to believe that they are that obsessed about Boo to try to do something so sneaky. Scout’s personality does not seem to be the one to break the rules. They went through all the trouble just to be caught. They were scared of the gun shot. They could have been seriously injured. Scout always seems to be the one with better judgment on what to do and what not to do. She wants to fit in so badly she went through with this plan. Jem lost his pants. He found it later folded on the fence where he dropped it. They believed Boo did it. It was surprising that everyone believed Boo to be a bad person, but towards the children, he seemed like a good person. Even after they tried to “stalk” Boo, Boo decided to fix his pants. This shows a lot about Boo’s character as people portray him as a bad guy and shows how judgmental people are. Scout is suspicious of Boo and should respect the fact that Boo wants his privacy.

“she had taught me to write and it was all her fault.”- Scout
I found this quote interesting because scout is actually md that she knew how to read and write. It is only normal that when you are ahead of everyone, you feal good about it and most people like to brag about it. But that was not the case wityh scout. Her teacher had made her feal bad about it. This quote also shows how anothers opinion can change your own. I’m sure that when scout was learning how to read she thought that it was a good thing but now all of a sudden she is told that it isn’t and she believes it.

One of the things that i paid the most attention to was the fact that walter put molasses all over his food. I find it verry interesting bacause not only is he putting something extremely sweet on food that doesn’t really go with it but also because it tells you a lot about walter. Normally when we dont like something but we have to eat it anyways we try to cover the taste up with something else. The food at scouts house wasn’t bad but it isn’t what walter eats every day. Walters family is so poor that they have to pay Atticus with food so i’m probably guessing that what they eat isn’t exactly the best. Walter is probably so used to having to cover up the taste of what he eats that he probably doesn’t even notice that he is doing it anymore. It really makes me value the fact that i have a good enough income that i actually like what i eat. I know that walter is just a fictional character but there were people during that time and even now that have to do the same thing.

In chapter two, it starts with Scout’s first day of school. She meets her new teacher, Miss Caroline. Scout begins to read the board that has the alphabet written on it. A problem arises when Miss Caroline does not approve of Scouts reading ability. In today’s time, the teachers would love the students to read fluently at such a young age. This is not giving the child the choice to do what she wants to do in her free time. She is being unfair to Scout because Miss Caroline may not understand the reasons why Scout wants to read. Reading is important to understand society and Scout is learning in her early ages that will benefit her in the future. School is where a person should learn and EXPAND their skills. This means not taking away a reading ability from a student. Students learn and build their skills. Miss Caroline is being too strict to her. Scout’s reading ability will only benefit the class. I guess Miss Caroline just wants to be the “boss” and be the only one to know “upper” level skills. The actions Miss Caroline shows towards Scout is rude and unusual. She should respect Scout more and set a good example to the other students.

Miss Caroline does not like the fact that Scout can read. This book represents the passion and love Scout has for books. She did not love reading until he lost that privilege to read. Scout cannot remember how she learned how to read. Miss Caroline thinks that she is taught incorrectly. The book also represents the fact that this is the first major problem Miss Caroline has with Scout. Usually, teachers would be happy that could read instead of putting them down. The teacher does not have any trust in Scout, even in a simple situation of reading. The book is an important symbol and reminds me of chapter 1-4.
